NURSES and teachers are taking sabbaticals from their public service jobs to go bankrupt in the UK, the Sunday Independent has learned.

Back in March last year 'StubbsGazette', in association with Red C, conducted the most comprehensive survey to date of the state of personal insolvency in Ireland.

THE number of Irish people adjudicated bankrupts in Ireland and the UK almost doubled this year.

The Personal Insolvency Bill that was published in June of last year and enacted just before Christmas has been held out as the solution to Ireland's chronic levels of personal indebtedness.

After several years in the making, the Insolvency Service of Ireland (ISI) finally opened its doors to process the first applications under the new regime earlier this month.

New government-backed insolvency schemes seem to offer relief to the heavily indebted – but first the debtor has to choose a Personal Insolvency Practitioner to represent argue their case.

PROFESSIONAL debt negotiators will be allowed to set their own rates and charge upfront fees from struggling debtors going through the State's new insolvency process.

THOUSANDS more people will apply for debts to be written off under new personal insolvency rules than expected, new research has found. As many as 25,000 people will apply for personal insolvency debt deals.

HUGE numbers of people believe new laws to allow people to have their debts reduced are set to be abused. The new personal insolvency system is set to come into operation by the summer.
